From today, you can quickly pay for your shopping, coffee and bus or train ride with a Suica card on your Garmin watch!

Suica (JR East) can now be added to compatible Garmin watches with the option to set the card as “Rapid Pass Card” (set by default but can be changed) which removes the hassle of having to enter the pin on you watch screen. Simply place the watch near the reader to pay.

Garmin Pay has been working for a while, unfortunately in Japan, only three bank cards can be added to the watches:

If you didn’t have any of these Japanese cards, you could still add a compatible card from your home country. I have Sony but added my UK Revolut MasterCard as a test and had no problems but other cards might incur on an exchange fee.

The lack of compatible cards is no longer an issue as you can create one Suica card on your watch.

The process is quick and easy. Create a Google Pay account with your usual debit/credit card if you don’t have one already. Any VISA, Mastercard, JCB, etc. will do. On your iPhone/Android Garmin app (need to update to the latest version) ‘Add Card’ and select ‘Transit’:

Register your name in katakana, DOB and mobile number. You’ll need an initial ¥1,000 charge from your Google Pay account and you’re good to go!

Compatible Garmin watches include VÍVO MOVE 3/3S, STYLE/LUXE, ACTIVE 4/4S and the FĒNIX models. For more info, you can check the Garmin Pay Suica website (Japanese only):
